Tap Room Podcast 23: Inspiration During a Photo Session

Creativity can start at any time and a lot of times it starts with a slight movement or quick thought that might be part of an intuition. The ideas can come from anywhere and what I find is the client sometimes doesn’t move forward with the thought or suggestion as they feel it might not be appropriate. From the photographers perspective, please don’t hold back.

Ideas can come from anywhere and in the middle of a session a unique idea can change a good image to a great image and totally change the outcome of a session. A lot of times, clients are a bit nervous when planning to get their image taken and not until after it ends to they share their idea. In my opinion, don’t wait and if it can be done during our time together let’s give it go.

Even if it’s prior to a session, don’t hold back and having a discussion with the photographer can allow for more creativity. I can attest to getting into a rut and a fresh perspective goes a long way. To help, here are a few ways to get a bit more creative.

  1. What are some of your favorite movies, genres, books, etc. Can you style a shoot around that concept?

  2. Is there a location or model that inspires you? What story can you design around those inspirational things?

  3. Is there a story or emotion from your life you want to communicate?

At Taylor Art Photos our preference is to meet with clients or at least discuss either on phone or via social media. Once we get an idea we start putting boards together and advise our clients to do the same via Pinterest. The whole process helps create not only new ideas, creates a level of comfort but also enhances the overall experience. We might be taking the picture, but it takes more then a photographer to create the image.
